Top 5 Family-Friendly Sports To Try

Health, wellbeing and weight loss are all hot topics at the moment, and many families are looking for ways to stay fit and healthy while spending time together. It can be difficult to find an activity that everyone will enjoy. Take a look at the list below for simple ways to get regular exercise and have fun as a family.

1. Cycling

Cycling has soared in popularity over the last couple of years, and a leisurely bike ride is perfect for the adventurous families out there. Pedal power makes it possible to cover more ground than the typical weekend walk and altering the route on a regular basis lets riders explore more of the local area. Riding a bike is still a rite of passage for kids growing up. If there are young children in the family, it will be a good opportunity to show them the ropes and set them on their way – practice makes perfect! Babies and toddlers can come along for the adventure too – just hitch up a trailer or attach a baby seat. There might even be space to accommodate the family pooch!

2. Swimming

Kids really enjoy splashing around, and swimming is another essential skill for them to learn. For the adults, it is great exercise, and easy on the joints! Many local swimming pools will offer lessons that cater for a range of abilities. For accomplished swimmers with a thirst for fun, the waterpark is the place to go.

3. Badminton

This racquet sport is ideal for a family of four – split up into doubles teams and let battle commence. On the surface, badminton can appear somewhat tame, but it is one of the most intense activities out there. Players will be at full-stretch and burning calories for sure. It is a pretty affordable choice too. A net can easily set up on the beach, at the park, or in the back yard. If heading indoors to play, be aware that court availability can be hit and miss. It is always smart to make a block booking where possible.

4. Table Tennis

Not many people now this, but table tennis is China’s national sport. Over there, it’s known as ping-pong, a nickname that has been adopted worldwide. For anyone who has not seen it played at the Olympics, check it out – it is a real spectacle. Typically played indoors, table tennis is an excellent ‘rainy day’ activity. Much like badminton, it works well with a family group of four, split into doubles. Within 30 minutes, everyone will be hooked, trying different spin techniques in an effort to bamboozle opponents! Some community venues will have tables available for use, but if there is space in the garage, it might be worth purchasing one.

5. Frisbee

Frisbee is about as basic as it gets. All that is needed is a flying disc and space to spread out into. It is a great impromptu activity for the park or beach. Dogs love Frisbee too, but a spare disc might be useful in case they get carried away! Believe it or not, Frisbee is a legitimate sport. ‘Ultimate Frisbee’, officially known as ‘

Ultimate

’ is very popular in the US, with over 5.1 million players taking part in a formal capacity each year. There are professional leagues and world championships, and the sport has even been recognized by the IOC (International Olympic Committee). You could even be seeing it at the

2028 Olympics

in Los Angeles.   Whatever physical activity the family chooses to take part in, make the most of the time together and don’t force the fun. If it isn't to everyone’s taste, try something else. With plenty of sports to choose from, it is always possible to discover something new. Get involved with local clubs and sport venues and find the right fit.
